Lemongrass is a fast growing perennial grass that grows up to 1.5 metres (4 feet) in height. Native to Asia, it is now cultivated mostly in the West Indies, Africa, and Tropical Asia.
Lemongrass essential oil is known for its invigorating and cleansing properties and has properties similar to citronella.
Lemongrass oil has a light and fresh lemony smell with earthy undertones. It is stimulating, relaxing, soothing, and balancing. It is used in aromatherapy to relieve muscle pain, externally to kill bacteria, ward off insects, and reduce body aches. It makes a wonderful fragrance addition to cosmetics, soaps, and homemade deodorizers. It is used in facial toners as its astringent properties may assist in reducing the look of oily or greasy skin.
