Coriander essential oil has a slightly sweet, spicy, herbaceous smell similar to that of cilantro. Coriander is a delicate annual herb with several branches having lacy leaves with jagged edges. The plant grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet with small pinkish-white flowers. The aromatic seeds are round and yellowish brown when ripe. Coriander refers only to the seeds of the plant. This causes confusion, as the oils are very different, but coming from the same plant. Cilantro and coriander cannot be interchanged as they have different chemical properties and function.
Coriander essential oil is antispasmodic and tranquilizing, stimulating the digestive system and relieving gas. It calms and promotes sleep. It is used to improve digestion, relieve flatulence, tone the stomach, revive, energize, improve mental clarity and memory, relieve fatigue and pain.
